Who you are agreeing with

StatementSmith is operated by Laantri Marketing LLC, a limited liability company registered in Wyoming, United States, at 1309 Coffeen Avenue, STE 1200, Sheridan, WY 82801, United States. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean that company, and "you" means whoever is using the site.

Using the site means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use it.

What the service is

StatementSmith converts bank statement files between formats. Every format but a PDF is converted in your browser, and those conversions are free and unlimited, with no account, no sign-up and no card.

Because those conversions run on your own machine, we do not receive, process or store the files they read. Reading a statement PDF is the one exception: it happens on our server, which is why it is the one part of the service that is metered and paid for. Both halves of that are described in full on the privacy page.

Paid plans, billing and cancellation

A paid plan is a monthly subscription that includes an allowance of statement PDF pages. The plans, their allowances and their prices are set out on the pricing page. They are not repeated here, so that this page cannot come to disagree with what you are actually charged.

A subscription is charged when you start it, and again on the same day of each following month until it is cancelled. Payment is handled by Stripe; we never see or hold your card number. Prices are in United States dollars and do not include any sales or value-added tax that applies where you are.

You can cancel yourself, at any time, from your account. The billing settings there open Stripe's own portal, where cancelling takes a click and needs no reason given to anybody. If you would rather ask us, write to contact@statementsmith.com from the address on the account and we will do it for you — but you should never have to, and if that link is ever broken we would like to know.

Cancelling stops the next payment. It does not end the month you have already paid for — your plan keeps working until that month runs out, and nothing is deleted when it does. Your account page says the date it ends.

The pages included with a plan reset at the start of each billing month and do not carry over. Pages bought as a top-up do not expire, and your included pages are always spent first, so that the ones you bought outright are the last to go.

If we change what a plan costs, we will tell you by email before the new price is charged to you, in time for you to cancel first.

Refunds

The free tier exists so you can find out whether this works on your own statements before paying for anything, and we would rather you used it than bought a plan on trust. If you do pay and it turns out not to suit you:

• Your first payment on a plan is refundable for 14 days. Ask within 14 days of that charge and we refund it in full, whether or not you converted anything with it.
• After that, cancelling does not refund the month in progress. It stops the payments that would have followed, and you keep the plan until the month you paid for ends.
• A top-up is refundable while it is unused. For as long as none of its pages have been spent, we refund it in full. Once extraction has run against them we cannot, because reading a page costs us money at the moment it is read.

To ask, write to contact@statementsmith.com from the address on the account and say which payment you mean. There is no form, and you do not have to give a reason. A refund goes back to the card that was charged and usually takes a few working days to appear after we send it.

If you are asking because a conversion produced a wrong file, please say so, and send the statement layout if you can. The refund does not depend on it. But a layout that reads badly is one we can usually fix, and we cannot fix the ones we never see.

None of the above affects a refund, cancellation or withdrawal right you have under the law where you live. Where such a right applies, it stands on its own and this section does not narrow it.

No warranty

The service is provided as-is and as-available, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

In particular, and stated plainly rather than buried:

• We do not warrant that a converted file will be accepted by any particular accounting package, version or account. File formats in this area are vendor-specific, partly undocumented and change without notice.
• We do not warrant that a conversion is complete or correct. Statement layouts vary enormously and a file can be misread in ways that produce a plausible result.
• We do not warrant that the site will be available, or that it will continue to exist in its current form or at all.

Checking the output is your responsibility

This is the clause that matters most in practice, so it is not written in the usual language.

A converted file can be wrong in ways that are not obvious: a date read month-first when it should have been day-first, a row lost to an unusual layout, an amount misread because of a thousands separator. The result imports without complaint and the error surfaces weeks later at reconciliation.

The balance check shown with every conversion exists to catch exactly this, and it is worth looking at. But the responsibility for verifying that a file is right before you rely on it, file it, or give it to a client is yours, not ours.

If you keep books for other people, treat a converted file the way you would treat any other working paper: check it against the statement before it goes anywhere.

Acceptable use

Do not use the site to break the law, and do not convert files you have no right to hold. Beyond that:

• Do not attempt to disrupt the site or the infrastructure serving it.
• Do not scrape or bulk-download the pages in a way that degrades them for other people.
• Do not present the service, or output produced by it, as your own product or as endorsed by us.
• Do not use the site to produce a document intended to mislead anyone about a transaction that did not happen.

Your files and your rights in them

You keep every right you already had in the statements you convert. We acquire no rights in them and no licence over them. For every format but PDF we never receive them at all; a PDF reaches our server to be read and is dropped when the request ends. If you switch on saved history we hold the file your conversion produced, for the window you chose and no longer, and we acquire no rights in that either. The privacy page describes all three.

Our rights in the site

The site's design, text, structure and code are owned by Laantri Marketing LLC or used under licence, and are protected by copyright. You may use the site as intended and quote from it with attribution; you may not republish it wholesale or present it as your own.

The file formats themselves are not ours. QuickBooks, Quicken, Xero and Sage are trademarks of their respective owners, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any of them. Their names are used here only to describe what a format is for.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising out of your use of the site.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to one hundred United States dollars.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations, in which case those exclusions apply to you only to the extent permitted, and nothing here limits liability for fraud or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

Changes

We may change these terms. The date at the top of this page changes when we do, and continuing to use the site after that means accepting the revised version.

An earlier version of this page promised that if the service ever gained an account, a paid tier or a step that sends a file to a server, these terms would be rewritten before that shipped rather than after. All three have now happened, and this is that rewrite. The same rule still applies to whatever comes next.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts of that state have jurisdiction over any dispute. Nothing here removes a consumer protection you have under the law of your own country that cannot be contracted away.
